Won Hyo

Required for: 4th Degree Brown Belt
Summary: The kata Won Hyo is named for a 7th century monk who was a pivotal figure in the unification of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea. This kata features versatile rapid-strike combination attacks and deflection-style blocks.

Ready Position: Bring the left foot to the right foot, bending both knees slightly. Make a fist with the right hand, covering it with an open left hand, about chin level, with the elbows tucked in towards the ribs.

  1. Bring the right hand into Chamber Position, placing the left hand on top of it in a Vertical Fist. Step with the left foot, pivotting ¼ turn to the left into a Left Back Stance. Perform a Left-Side Box Block. Kihap.
  2. Extend the left arm. Fold the right hand beside the right side of the head. Perform a Right-Hand Inward Knife Hand Strike.
  3. Turn the right hand palm down, pulling the left hand into Chamber Position. Stepping slightly forward with the left foot into a deeper Back Stance, perform a Left-Hand Side Punch.
  4. Bring the left hand to Chamber Position, folding the right hand on top in a Vertical Fist. Slide the left foot to the right foot, step to the right with the right foot into a Right Back Stance. Perform a Right-Side Box Block.
  5. Extend the right arm. Fold the left hand beside the left side of the head. Perform a Left-Hand Inward Knife Hand Strike.
  6. Turn the left hand palm down, pulling the right hand into Chamber Position. Stepping slightly forward with the right foot into a deeper Back Stance, perform a Right-Hand Side Punch.
  7. Step the right foot to the left foot while turning the body ¼ towards the right. Place the right hand in Chamber Position with the left hand on top in a Vertical Fist. Turn the head so that the face is over the left shoulder, assuming a Left Side Kick Ready Stance.
  8. Perform a Left-Leg Side Kick.
  9. Set the left leg down in front into a Left Back Stance. Perform a Left-Hand Knife Hand Block.
  10. Step forward with the right foot into a Right Back Stance. Perform a Right-Hand Knife Hand Block.
  11. Step forward with the left foot into a Left Back Stance. Perform a Left-Hand Knife Hand Block.
  12. Bring the left hand downward in a blocking motion until it is horizontal with the palm down, and step forward with the right foot into a right front stance. Perform a Right-Hand Spear Thrust Strike with your right hand, positioning the right hand on top of the left, with the left hand slightly in front of the right elbow. Kihap.
  13. Bring the right hand into Chamber Position, placing the left hand on top of it in a Vertical Fist. Stepping with the left foot and pivoting on the right, turn towards the rear left ¾ turn (turning counter-clockwise when seen from above) into a Left Back Stance. Perform a Left Side Box Block.
  14. Extend the left arm. Fold the right hand beside the right side of the head. Perform a Right-Hand Inward Knife Hand Strike.
  15. Turn the right hand palm down, pulling the left hand into Chamber Position. Stepping slightly forward with the left foot into a deeper Back Stance, perform a Left-Hand Side Punch.
  16. Bring the left hand to Chamber Position, folding the right hand on top in a Vertical Fist. Slide the left foot to the right foot, step to the right with the right foot into a Right Back Stance. Perform a Right-Side Box Block.
  17. Extend the right arm. Fold the left hand beside the left side of the head. Perform a Left-Hand Inward Knife Hand Strike.
  18. Turn the left hand palm down, pulling the right hand into Chamber Position. Stepping slightly forward with the right foot into a deeper Back Stance, perform a Right-Hand Side Punch.
  19. Fold the left vertically in front of the left shoulder. Slide the right foot to the left foot. Pivot ¼ towards the left, stepping with the left foot forwards into a Left Front Stance. Bring the right hand down into a wide cross-body Scoop Block.
  20. Extend the right hand. Perform a Right-Leg Offensive Front Kick.
  21. Setting the right foot down in front into a Right Front Stance, perform a Left-Hand Reverse Punch.
  22. Perform a Left-Hand Scoop Block.
  23. Extend the left hand. Perform a Left-Leg Offensive Front Kick.
  24. Setting the left foot down in front into a Left Front Stance, perform a Right-Hand Reverse Punch.
  25. Pivotting ¼ turn to the left on the left foot, bring the right foot in front of the left foot into a Right Side Kick Ready Stance, pulling the left hand into Chamber Position and placing the right hand on top in a Vertical Fist.
  26. Perform a Right Leg Side Kick. Set the right foot down into a Right Back Stance while performing a Right-Hand Knife Hand Block.
  27. Slide the right foot to the left foot. Pivot ¾ turn towards the left (turning counter-clockwise when seen from above), stepping with the left foot into a Left Back Stance. Perform a Left-Hand Guarding Forearm Block.
  28. Slide the left foot to the right foot. Slide the right foot out into a Right Back Stance. Perform a Right-Hand Guarding Forearm Block. Kihap.

Return to Ready Position.
